Print a test page by Brother printer series

Brother HL (mono laser)

Hold Go ~4 seconds while Ready to print a configuration page with toner and drum life. Use our B&W test to check toner density and text sharpness.

Brother HL (colour laser)

Menu → Print Reports → Configuration, or hold Go. Print our colour test to confirm all four toners (CMYK) register correctly.

Brother MFC (laser all-in-one)

Use Menu → Print Reports → Configuration / Print Settings. Our B&W test verifies text quality; check the drum counter if you see repeating marks.

Brother MFC-J (inkjet)

Menu → Ink → Print Quality → Improve Print Quality for a nozzle check, then print our colour test to confirm all channels are firing.

Brother DCP-J (inkjet)

Settings → Maintenance → Improve Print Quality. After cleaning, print our colour test to verify ink flow across cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Brother DCP-L (mono laser)

Hold Go ~4 seconds for a configuration/test page. Rock the toner to redistribute if the B&W test looks faded.

Brother prints a test page but won't print documents?

If your Brother printer prints this test page but won't print your documents, the hardware, ink/toner and connection are all fine — the problem is software-side. Work through these fixes in order:

  1. Restart the Print Spooler: open services.msc, right-click Print Spooler → Restart.
  2. Set your Brother printer as the default in Settings → Printers & scanners.
  3. Clear the print queue of any stuck or errored jobs.
  4. Reinstall the latest Brother driver from the Brother website.
  5. Test from a different app (Notepad) to rule out an application-specific fault.
  6. For network printers, confirm the Brother printer's IP address hasn't changed.

Brother printer diagnostic tips

Brother built-in test page

Hold Go for 4 seconds on most Brother laser printers to print a built-in configuration page showing toner levels, drum kit life, firmware version, and page count.

Brother inkjet nozzle check

On Brother MFC-J inkjets, press Menu → Ink / Maintenance → Print Quality → Improve Print Quality to print a nozzle check grid and trigger automatic head cleaning.

Brother drum kit inspection

If you see black dots or vertical marks repeating every ~3.7 inches on laser output, the drum kit is likely damaged. Check the drum counter in Menu → Machine Info.

Brother toner shaking tip

When Brother laser output starts fading, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it horizontally 10–15 times to redistribute toner before installing a new one.

Brother Printer Test Page — FAQ

How do I print a test page on a Brother printer?

Click Print Test Page above — it works on every Brother model. On most Brother laser printers you can also press and hold the Go button for about 4 seconds (until the Toner/Ready light flashes) to print a built-in test/configuration page.

How do I print a Brother configuration page?

On Brother laser printers, hold the Go button for ~4 seconds while in the Ready state. The printer prints a full settings page showing toner level, drum kit life, firmware version, IP address and page count. On touchscreen models use Menu → Print Reports → Configuration.

My Brother MFC prints with horizontal lines — how do I fix it?

Horizontal white lines on a Brother MFC usually mean clogged ink nozzles (inkjet) or a worn drum unit (laser). Inkjet: run Menu → Ink → Print Quality → Improve Print Quality. Laser: check the drum life counter and replace the drum if it's near end of life.

How do I check toner levels on a Brother laser printer?

Print a configuration page (hold Go ~4 seconds) to see toner and drum life, or use Menu → Machine Information → Parts Life. Our test page also reveals density and fading issues that indicate low toner.

Brother printer prints blank pages — what should I do?

For laser printers, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it side-to-side to redistribute toner, then reinstall; also make sure the orange shipping cover/tape is removed. For inkjets, run a Print Head Cleaning cycle. If blank pages persist, the print head or drum may need replacing.

What does 'Unable to Print' or 'Machine Error' mean on a Brother printer?

These codes (e.g. Unable to Print 30/32/50, Machine Error E50/EA) usually point to a fuser, laser-unit or paper-feed fault. Turn the printer off for a few minutes and back on to clear a temporary error; if the code returns the named part likely needs service.

What is Brother 'Unable to Clean 46'?

Unable to Clean 46 on a Brother inkjet means the ink absorber box (waste ink pad) is full. It needs to be replaced or reset — the absorber box is a user-replaceable part on many Brother inkjet models.

My Brother prints a test page but won't print documents — why?

If the test page prints but documents don't, the hardware and ink/toner are fine and the issue is software-side: restart the Print Spooler, set the Brother printer as default, clear stuck jobs, and reinstall the latest Brother driver.

Is the Brother test page download a real PDF?

Yes. The Download PDF button generates a genuine vector, print-ready PDF (A4, Letter or Legal) with CMYK blocks, grayscale gradients, alignment marks and multi-size text — perfect for checking Brother inkjet colour or laser toner density.
